National Champions: AP, Coaches, and Power Points System

The Power Points System's intended purpose is to determine playoff teams and seeds. The playoffs would determine the national champion. That said, suppose the Power Points System determined the national champion. Here are the Power Points System's National Champions for the past 35 seasons under two different scenarios. For each season, the team listed first is the national champion if the title is awarded to the bowl winner with the most power points through regular season play. The team listed second is the national champion if the title is awarded to the bowl winner with the most power points through postseason play. These results are based on FBS games only without the benefit of equal maximum game regular season schedules and teams knowingly competing according to the Power Points System's rules. Between the two scenarios, 40 different teams won the national title under at least one scenario. 31 of the 40 teams won the AP and/or Coaches poll title. Among the nine teams that did not win a major poll title, six received the second most first place votes in the AP poll ranging from of a low of 3.5 (1980 Pittsburgh) to a high of 21 (1979 USC).

Playoff Destiny

Under ideal circumstances, all FBS teams would play equal or equal maximum game regular season schedules versus FBS competition only and knowingly compete according to the rules of the Power Points System. That said, I have applied those rules to FBS games only for the past 35 seasons to determine how many AP poll top two, top four, and top eight teams controlled their playoff destiny based on how the season played out. In truth, no team controls their destiny from the start of competition because there are more mathematically possible unbeaten teams than available playoff berths and no automatic access to unbeaten teams.

TOP TWO
Since 1978, the AP and Power Points System (PPS) have agreed on 46 of 70 top two teams. 58 of 70 AP top two teams controlled their PPS top two playoff destiny. Seven more would have needed help in one game if undefeated/untied. Six of 12 teams that did not control destiny played less than a full schedule versus FBS competition.

TOP FOUR
Since 1978, the AP and PPS have agreed on 101 of 140 top four teams. 128 of 140 AP top four teams controlled their PPS top four playoff destiny. Eight more would have needed help in one game if undefeated/untied. Eight of 12 teams that did not control destiny played less than full schedule versus FBS competition.

TOP EIGHT
Since 1978, the AP and PPS have agreed on 217 of 280 top eight teams. 279 of 280 AP top eight teams controlled their PPS top eight playoff destiny. The one and only team that did not control its destiny would have needed help in one game if undefeated and untied and that same team only played nine FBS games out of an 11 game schedule.

2013 Power Points Standings thru 09-02

These are the standings based on all games with FCS wins and losses treated as equal to the least valuable FBS win and loss respectively. One week into the season and the most important thing is being 1-0 as this the time of year margin of victory makes any difference. Basically, teams ranked at the top this weekend had the biggest blowouts and the difference between a 70 point win and a one point win will likely be insignificant by season's end. For example, Georgia Tech is #1 after a 70-0 win over Elon. However, that win will probably be worth no more than one power point by season's end while Clemson had the best win based on 2012 power point values. Only the top 25 teams are listed.
